ABSTRACTS - PENUMBRA
The penumbra series is a subject that I have been exploring for the last two decades. My main inspiration is dusk, when our colour vision shifts towards weird colours that cannot be easily defined anymore.
I try to create a paradox in my paintings: make really dark colours glow as much as possible, like if they were pure phosphorescent light and not paint.
I was invited in 2002 to create these large-scale abstract paintings by the Canadian company Bonjour Montreal. These pictures shown here belong to a series of almost 20 oil paintings that were exhibited in Montreal with the support of the Portuguese Embassy at Ottawa. Some pieces went to Japan after the show while others became the companie's permanent display. These diptychs and triptychs measure 2m high and were started in Lisbon and finished in Montreal.
